What is Traditional  Acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system based on ancient principles going back nearly 2000 years. It considers pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. The aim of acupuncture treatment, is to bring the body back to equilibrium. It’s a system suited to modern life as physical, emotional and mental wellbeing are seen as interdependent.

Based on traditional belief, acupuncturists use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined over centuries. The focus is on the individual patient, not their illness, and all their symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Each person is unique; two people with the same western diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments.

Traditional acupuncturists believe that illness and pain occur when the body’s vital energy (qi) cannot flow freely. Reasons for this include; emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury. By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist aims to restore the free flow of qi  and trigger the body’s natural healing processes.

A growing body of evidence shows that traditional acupuncture can safely treat a variety of common health problems. Please visit for details of these conditions and the available research on the British Acupuncture Council’s website or visit our resident acupuncturist Kelly Sun‘s page and website
