Please watch “The beginner’s guide to Chiropractic”
Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession. It is the third largest profession after medicine and dentistry. There are about 10 million chiropractic patient visits to British Chiropractic Association members every year in the UK.
Chiropractic is a form of healthcare concerned with diagnosis and treatment of problems with the framework of bones and muscles (particularly the spine) that support the body (the musculoskeletal system) and the effects of these on the nervous system. Problems can be caused by accidents, lack of exercise, poor posture, stress, illness and everyday wear and tear.
Chiropractic is suitable for everybody from babies to the elderly. So the chiropractor looks at the person as an individual and will tailor a package of care for them.
Why Might I Visit A Chiropractor?
Even though the first thing that may spring to mind is that ‘chiropractors treat backs’ – which they certainly do very successfully – today’s chiropractors also diagnose and treat other musculoskeletal disorders as well as a number of other conditions.

What Our Patients Say About Their Experience of Chiropractic Treatment
“On top of a shock diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, 6 weeks ago I had the most agonising onset of sciatica in both legs. I’ve never known pain like it. Every step was torture with stabbing pains, my legs felt on fire. As Barnes Chiropractic was close to my home, so hobbling there was possible, I tried Julian’s [chiropractic] treatment, he also recommended a couple of sessions of Acupuncture [with Kelly Sun] and over the last few weeks, the pain has abated and I’m feeling like a different person. I SO recommend the treatment which is aimed at your whole being – not just the localised sore bits. Have patience and faith: I never thought I’d be free of agony – this is like a new life!” Philippa Deane 26.6.2012
“I highly recommend this excellent Chiropractic Healthcare Clinic. Julian has been treating me for over 14 years during which time he has successfully helped me – along with many of my family and friends – with various neck, back and joint issues. Over time, I have learned the importance of regular chiropractic “maintenance” sessions, including massages, which together act as a necessary preventative measure in keeping my joints and muscles flexible, thereby eradicating aches and pains…and, of course, helping to improve my golf swing! Many thanks to Julian and his wonderful, talented team.” Aidan McKenna
“Summer 2011, I was suffering from terrible chronic tension headache at the back of my head which prevented me from going out for almost 3months and I had lost some weight. I had undergone several sessions of physiotherapy as well as acupuncture, all of which only helped me on a short term basis, so I decided to try chiropractic treatment. I started with Julian in September 2011, which was when I was at my worst. I initially started having treatment twice a week, which involved strengthening my core body as well as helping me with my posture all of which had contributed to my chronic headaches. Immediately there was a change and my headaches were becoming more manageable which is when Julian introduced some exercises for me to do at home as well as getting me to change some of my sitting and computing habits. It has been almost 6 months now and my headaches are extremely infrequent- almost nonexistent! On the odd occasion when I do get them, I have the exercises Julian gave me which help relieve the pressure enormously. After suffering from the headaches on a consistent basis for so long, I never thought I would be able to feel myself again but am definitely on the road to recovery thanks to Julian.” Sahar Beyad
How Do Chiropractors Work?
Chiropractors use gentle but specific manipulation called adjustments to improve the function of joints. This can improve the brain/body connections via the nervous system.
Apart from adjustment, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound, exercise and acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.
Chiropractors do not use drugs or surgery.
How Qualified Is A Chiropractor?
Chiropractors who are registered with The General Chiropractic Council and are Members of the British Chiropractic Association have completed a minimum of four years full time training at an accredited chiropractic college. The training they receive is very comparable in content, hours studied and rigour to conventional medical training.
Chiropractors are requried to fulfil continuing professional development (CPD) in order to maintain their chiropractic registration. All chiropractors continue on-going postgraduate training each year to maintain the highest standards.
Does Chiropractic Work?
Chiropractic works and is backed up by growing medical evidence and is recommended in numerous government guidelines.
